ABOUT US

Well, The US in ABOUT US is really the music community in Kelowna that provides the information in these pages. The volunteer behind the site is Ray Turner. The bigearsray moniker has to do with Ray's view that in order to play good music, of any kind, you have to have big ears.

Ray started this website because of his interest in Basement Musicians Circle that began at the Rotary Center for the Arts three years ago. The BM Circles (every second Tuesday at 7 pm) carry on under hosted by Randal Roberts.

The site is aimed at the music community of Kelowna, rather than trying to serve the needs of other areas on the planet, worthy as they are. We especially want to be an information service for newcomers and wannabees in directories for GROUPS, MUSICIANS, LESSONS, VENUES, STORES/SERVICES and UNCLASSIFIED ADS.

Ray Turner plays tenor saxophone in his basement. He likes to improvise and use his ears. That is his reason for encouraging content on what he feels is the neglected subject of playing by ear. Those who play, read and use sheet music are welcome visitors and encouraged to use the directories.

The category of
UNCLASSIFIEDS is a catch-all, a place where musicians might find other musicians, bands or groups to play with, also where groups might advertise for new members. Instruments could be sold and bought, or rented. The valuable commodities of ideas and thoughts can be exchanged. I would be very interested to hear from teachers who include PLAYING BY EAR in their tuition.

In his earlier life, Ray Turner worked as a television director, film editor, puppeteer and childrens camp programmer. He does not like the idea of being "retired" so he's not. He lives in downtown Kelowna and walks mostly. If you want a chat, he can sometimes be found in the Bean Scene coffee shop or HighBrowse book store. Find him if you can.
