Here's a message from Jim Copeman of SMALL CHANGE:
Hi Everyone,
Well, April was a slow month for us at Small Change Inc, but starting May 1st we'll be rearing our ugly heads again for your amusement.
First I'd like to thank Don White for bring out a gang of his friends to our last gig at the Minstrel, and to Don Scofield also for bring a collection of vagabonds and thieves, the last time we were at Vintners Lounge. Also thanks to the repeat offenders who have been coming out to our shows and to the new people we've been meeting....We enjoy the energy and try return it in our music...ahhhh, the natural cycle of life.
Here are some upcoming dates with hopefully more to follow:
May 1st...Kelowna Museum...B.C. Arts Council (private event)
May 6th...The Habitat 8pm...Hosting 'Open Mic'
May 8th...Vintners Lounge...Capri Coastal Hotel 7-10pm
May 29th...Minstrel Cafe (to be confirmed)
June 12th...Vintners Lounge...Capri Coastal Hotel 7-10pm
July 24th...Kelowna Music & Arts Festival @ the Rotary Centre for the Arts..."Opening Night Party"...7pm
July 25th...Squilax Music Festival...Chase BC
So that's it for now....Please tell others about our gigs and sent them towww.myspace.com/smallchangeok to check out our sound. And if you guys want to hit it a few times to build up our numbers, that would be ok to.
Thanks everyone,
Happy Earth Day,
Jim Copeman,
Small Change

SAMBA TRIBE

SAMBA TRIBE
Brazilian Batucada/Samba Drumming
Get ready to be part of the first Brazilian Carnival in Kelowna!
Sambistas meet Friday evenings at the Parkinson Rec. Centre. Come check it out.
Yonisha (Miriam Cunha) is teaching Samba style percussion at the Parkinson Recreation Centre on Friday nights.
Batucada is a style of samba with roots in African percussion where everybody plays as 'one' and is characterized by its repetitive style and fast pace. Learn to play some of the many Brazilian percussion instruments that make part of Brazilian Carnival parades. In this course, students will explore the amazing and contagious Brazilian rhythms and play along in a group. Many instruments like pandeiro, tamborim, cuica, agogo, reco-reco and chocalho will be provided or you are welcome to bring your own percussion instrument if desired. This is an excellent course for those interested in becoming more familiar with samba's roots and also for those wanting to improve their musical expression through vocalizing and percussive techniques. The instructor, Yonisha, a Brazilian and former Carnival parade sambista in Rio de Janeiro, grew up amongst musicians, has performed and taught internationally.
Call Miriam at 250.448.5523 for details

CROSSFIRE SAX QUINTET
CROSSFIRE SAX QUINTET
(Malcolm Green writes)
We are a Sax Quintet and rhythm section. We've been playing together for almost a year and have performed at a variety of venues. I would like to have our band included on your website if possible.
We play a mixture of Gospel and original tunes, all with a Jazz flair. I write and arrange all the music and play lead alto. Although we are "reading" musicians, I do promote and encourage a lot of improvised soloing within the band.
We are currently looking for a piano player, so I wouldn't mind advertising for one on your site as well.
Let me know if this works for you and what info you might require.
Thanks,
Malcolm Green, CrossFire Sax Quintet

GROOVEYARD

GROOVEYARD
is a band of Kelowna musicians. I enjoyed the way Jim Caldwell plays his fretless bass when he was a member of Small Change. He plays all kinds of kinds of guitars and his wife, Yvonne Caldwell is a hot drummer.
