Can you sing or play any of these songs?
Body and Soul All the Things You Are Summertime
'Round Midnight I Can't Get Started My Funny Valentine
Lover Man Stella By Starlight Yesterdays
What Is This Thing Called Love?

It is worth a look just to check on what is considered jazz. I was surprised to find “Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer” and “O Little Town Of Bethlehem!” For our purposes, JAZZ means ensemble or traditional jazz standards, Dixieland, ragtime, jazzed-up Broadway show tunes and ballads. Or it might be a jazzed up version of your own song.
SUNDAY JAZZ JAM is an opportunity for musicians to meet once a week to arrange and play their favourite jazz standards in a non-performing, workshop atmosphere. Participants offer songs for the ensemble to discuss, arrange and play in a new and startling version. Startling, because those registering will include a wide variety of instrumentalists and singers. It is unlikely that a balanced group of musicians such as a piano trio, string quartet, or jazz sextet will attend, so the ENSEMBLE approach, like that of a Dixieland or a traditional jam might work well. An open approach is required here.
The SUNDAY JAZZ JAM is on, when else? – Sundays, from 2-4 pm in the Atrium at the Rotary Centre for the Arts. Starting June 27.
A piano and drum kit will be available, also a microphone for vocalists. Jazz and bass guitars can be amplified. Otherwise, most will be acoustic instruments. This is a great opportunity to get those instruments out of the closet make music again.
If you are interested to attend as player or singer, or just come for a cup of tea and listen to some jazz on a Sunday afternoon, do drop in. You can get more details from the Rotary Centre or Ray Turner 250-862-9832.
